Fiesta de la Virgen de la Peña 2015
25,000 people celebrated the fiesta de la Virgen de la Peña which culminated last weekend in Vega de Río Palmas. The festival, the island’s biggest, is celebrated every year when thousands of islanders dressed in traditional costume make the pilgrimage on foot to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Peña in Vega de Río Palmas.
 

Improvements for Playa del Castillo and Puerto del Rosario Seafronts
The reconditioning of the Playa del Castillo beach (Caleta de Fuste) and seafront is finally due to begin in October after years of delays. The project has a budget of nearly 2 million euros, is expected to take 10 months to complete and will coincide with the demolition and rebuilding of the La Fresquita Restaurant.

Puerto del Rosario’s Playa de Los Pozos will be expanded with the addition of 115,000 cubic metres of sand dredged from the bay and the construction of a protective breakwater.
The Puerto del Rosario seafront is also due to be improved next year with an investment of 5 million euros.
 

Free Bus for Cruise Ship Passengers
The Ayuntamiento de Puerto del Rosario has begun offering a free bus service to transfer cruise ship passengers to the capital’s main shopping area. A pamphlet with map and points of interest is being distributed to passengers and street entertainment will be provided. Fuerteventura expects to receive 120,000 cruise ship passengers during this Cruise Ship season (which ends in June 2016).
 


Record Visitors in August
515,078 passengers used Fuerteventura Airport in August – 5.3% more than in the same period in 2014. This was the largest amount of passengers ever received by the Airport and continues a strong growth trend for the Island.
 

Cabildo gets its first Electric Vehicle
As part of the Cabildo’s drive towards a more sustainable island, Fuerteventura’s Cabildo added its first electric vehicle, a Renault Zoe. Five electric charging stations are to be installed around the island.
