Playa de los Pozos re-opens
Puerto del Rosario’s most popular beach has been re-opened to the public following the completion of the Port Authority’s dredging works and expansion of the beach. The beach, which was closed for just under a month is now 600 metres long (it was 200).
Two new Wind Farms submitted to Public Consultation
Two planned Wind Farms, one in Tuineje and the other on the border between the municipalities of Betancuria and Pajara have been submitted for Public Consultation. The Rosa Catalina García Windfarm in Tuineje is for a proposed 20 Megawatt, 4 Wind Turbine farm, while the Alisio Windfarm proposed for the Cuchillo Negro Hill is for a 10 Megawatt, 5 Turbine Farm. Interested parties have until the 10th of December to lodge any objections.
Award-winning Cheeses
Fuerteventura Cheese maker, Maxorata, earned four Silver Medals at the recent World Cheese Awards, held at the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham’s NEC. The prize-winning cheeses were the Maxorata semicurado pimentón and Maxorata curado pimentón.
21,000 sign petition against Customs Duty and Import Taxes
Despite being part of the EU, the Canary Islands lie outside the EU VAT treaty and, as such, are subject to import duty and customs charges, even when importing items from Mainland Spain or the rest of the EU. Therefore Canarian consumers have to pay expensive customs fees and taxes when buying items online from elsewhere in Europe. A recent petition on Change.org has garnered over 21,000 signatures demanding a reduction or elimination of these charges.
