EU rules in favour of Fuerteventura Lawyer
A Fuerteventura Lawyer who was fined €8100 for criticising a Judge following a 2006 real estate case, has been indemnified by the European court of Human Rights for the same amount. The Lawyer, Fernando Rodríguez Ravelo, accused the judge of “lying and distorting reality” in a letter which was only seen by those involved in the case. The EU court ruled that although the language used was strong, the Lawyer is protected by the right to freedom of expression, and that the fine issued served to dissuade other Lawyers from protecting the interests of their clients.
