Record Year for Tourism
According to provisional figures from the Fuerteventura Tourist Board, the island received just under 3 million visitors in 2015. Of the 2,970,145 visitors, 2 million were foreign tourists arriving by plane, 200,000 were Spanish visitors from mainland Spain, 71,750 arrived by air from other Canary Islands, 113,395 arrived via Cruise ship and another 610,000 arrived by ship in Corralejo, Puerto del Rosario, Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable.
La Oliva Mayor finally goes
The ex-mayor of La Oliva has finally been removed from office after failing to comply with a court sentence that banned him from office for 9 years. Domingo González Arroyo, colloqually-known as the Marqués de las Dunas, had his appeal denied in October, but simply refused to go. He was finally escorted from the council on the 30th of December.
Motorway Opens
The new section of motorway between Matas Blancas and Costa Calma opened on the 29th of December. The new part of the North-South highway bypasses Costa Calma, which was a bottleneck for traffic, with its many pedestrian crossings. The Caldereta-Corralejo section is not now expected to open until at least 2017.
